MILWAUKEE – June 8, 2017 – This summer marks a very special milestone for Bank Mutual. On June 27, 2017, the largest Milwaukee-based bank will celebrate 125 years of helping its Wisconsin neighbors and communities grow and thrive by achieving their financial milestones. To commemorate the anniversary, Bank Mutual is launching the #Milestone125 program that will include 125 Days of Appreciation for the company’s customers, employees and communities.

A major focus of this program will be raising awareness and funds for the Wisconsin-based non-profit organization, Camp Hometown Heroes.

According to Tragedy Assistance Program for Survivors (TAPS), nearly 5,000 U.S. children have lost a parent who served in the military since 9/11. Often, these children face depression, profound grief, isolation and a sense of helplessness.

Camp Hometown Heroes provides children and siblings of fallen U.S. Military between the ages of seven to 17 the chance to experience friendship, healing and growth together through a week-long summer camp experience, free of charge. This year, the Wisconsin-based camp will host 180 kids from across the country and will depend on donations to pay for each camper's travel and camp experience.

Camp Hometown Heroes To raise the money and help send kids to this extraordinary camp, Bank Mutual will dedicate funds raised from the company's Jeans for a Cause program to Camp Hometown Heroes for the next 18 Fridays. This effort will enable the Bank to collectively make a bigger impact on this deserving charity.

Bank Mutual also encourages the public to make donations to Camp Hometown Heroes by visiting any one of its locations across the state or stopping by the Bank Mutual booth at the Wisconsin State Fair.

"Camp Hometown Heroes is an inspiration," said Dave Baumgarten, president and chief executive officer of Bank Mutual. "We owe so much to those who have sacrificed their lives for our freedom. Honoring their legacy by supporting the loved ones left behind is something we all can get behind."

To continue saying thanks by giving back, employees will also be encouraged to give back to our local communities through volunteerism, which, along with donating, is already a huge part of the Bank Mutual culture.

In 2016, nearly $30,000 was raised by employees through the Jeans for a Cause program and other regional giving initiatives held throughout the year. Employees are given Volunteer Time Off benefits, and encouraged to take time off of work to engage in volunteer activities that they’re passionate about.

During the next 125 days, participating in group volunteer activities will be encouraged, as will participating in volunteer work on one’s own. To make an impact as a team, Bank Mutual has organized group volunteer events to bring our employees together and have fun while supporting a good cause. In June, Bank Mutual employees will band together to help the following organizations and others with their time and talents:

In addition to giving back to our communities, Bank Mutual will be hosting customer appreciation events throughout the summer at each of its 63 locations. Customers will also be given the chance to win $10,000 in Steinhafels furniture through Bank Mutual’s Debit Mastercard® swipe and win promotion.

All of the #Milestone125 activities will be shared on the bank’s social media channels. Throughout the 125 days, Bank Mutual will share “Milestone Memories,” featuring stories from the company’s long-time employees about working at Bank Mutual and how much banking has changed over the years. A Community Spotlight series will showcase interesting facts and tidbits about cities and towns in which the bank and its employees live and work. In addition, a special “Mutual Milestones” series will feature financial advice and tips to further encourage financial literacy.

History of Bank Mutual

Our roots date back to 1892, when a group of individuals working at a local Milwaukee newspaper known as Evening Wisconsin got together and decided that they’d help each other achieve the financial milestone of homeownership.

As a part-time, group effort, they elected officers among themselves and met one evening a week to conduct their business. The officers accepted savings deposits from the members, and rotated, allowing each one to borrow the accumulated savings to partially finance the purchase of a home. In those days, there were no 30-year home loans and the money that was borrowed was paid back in a relatively short period of time, allowing the other members to take their turn at borrowing to buy a home.

Today, Bank Mutual is the largest commercial bank headquartered in Milwaukee, with over $2.5 billion in assets and a strong network of bank offices across the state of Wisconsin and one office in Minnesota.
