Kids blowing bubbles outside having fun

As a parent, hearing the dreaded phrase “I’m bored” is comparable to nails running down a chalkboard.  And that phrase is only amplified in the summertime when kids are out of school and craving entertainment 24/7. So how can a parent stay sane without emptying their pocketbook? We’ve rounded up six of our favorite fun, and nearly free, summertime activities.

  1. Take a day trip to your local beach or lake. Spending time near the water never gets old when the temps are high. Why wait until the weekend to enjoy the beauty of your local beaches and/or lakes? Pack a picnic lunch and plenty of sunscreen, and you’re set for fun in the sun! To find a lake near, check out the Wisconsin DNR lake finder.

  2. Catch an outdoor family flick. Many communities organize outdoor movies at local parks. Check out your local community calendar to see if any events are organized in your area.  If not, consider hosting your own. For those of you in or around Milwaukee, check out this guide to free outdoor movies in the area.

  3. Enjoy the great outdoors. Lace up your hiking boots, or jump on your bike and hit the trails. Reconnect with your family while taking in fresh air and beautiful sites. Find a state park near you.

  4. Bring the great outdoors to you. Gather all the supplies needed to pull off a great camping trip, in the comfort of your own backyard. Pitch a tent, tell campfire stories, and make s’mores. A simple and inexpensive night of entertainment. And bonus, you don’t have to suffer through a long car ride with “Are we there yet?” ringing in your ears.

  5. Get crafty. Paint flower points, make stepping stones, or decorate kites. Whatever your craft of choice is, enjoy doing it in the sunshine!

  6. Play lawn games. Take advantage of the warmer days (we all know they’re far too short in Wisconsin) and play games outside on the lawn. Sick of bag toss, ladder golf, and the other typical lawn games? Get creative and make your own
